Function of conventional softening systems
Ion exchangers (salt systems)
A water softening system based on ion exchange leads to a change in drinking water quality. A softening system exchanges useful minerals and the annoying limescale for sodium. This leads to an increase in the sodium value in the water. This is also the reason for the regular addition of salt to the water softener's storage tank. From a nutritional point of view, this removal of minerals from drinking water is questionable.
Heterogeneous catalysis (seed crystals)
The effect of so-called catalyst technology is based on the generation of crystal nuclei. In this case, however, the crystal nuclei are generated by the formation of tiny lime crystals on the surface of a special granulate from the calcium and magnesium ions contained in the water. The lime crystals formed are detached from the surface by the flow or contact between the granules. The formation process of crystals takes place automatically in supersaturated water on the surface of the granules. Such systems have therefore primarily been used in the hot water sector to date.

Electrophysical treatment
This area includes coils that emit electrical impulses. An electro-magnetic field is created in which the physical properties of the lime particles contained in the flowing water are changed. This is done in such a way that they no longer bind together and are therefore less able to form deposits. Their electromagnetic fields are intended to shift the calcification process away from the pipe wall into the flowing water and keep the pipes clear. This process is said to form microcrystals of limescale, which remain in suspension and are washed away with the flowing water.
