A water softening system based on ion exchange leads to a change in the quality of drinking water. Water hardness, or the lime in the water, consists mostly of the minerals calcium and magnesium bound to carbonate ions. Hard water contains particularly many carbonate ions.
A softening system exchanges these calcium and magnesium ions for sodium. This leads to an increase in the sodium value in the water. This is also the reason that salt must be regularly refilled into the storage container of the softening system. And no, not Himalayan or sea salt. Special chemically treated sodium chloride instead.

The effect of the so-called catalyst technology is based on the generation of crystal nuclei.
